The Ingredients

Scale: Set of tones that define the available pitch material and the tonal identity.

Chord: Specific subset of tones taken from a parent scale that articulate the harmonic identity.

The Environment

Region: Span of musical time defined by a scale–chord pairing.

Element: Individual scale or chord used to define a region.

Move: Shift between regions driven by a change in scale, chord, or both.

Property: Musical characteristic of an element, region, or move.

Slot A / B: Container for either the source (A) or destination (B) region of a move.

Scale Move: Shift between source and destination scales.

Chord Move: Shift between source and destination chords.

Region Move: Shift between source and destination regions.

Progression: Series of regions over time that traces harmony throughout a musical excerpt.

1. Identify elements

Use the Element Picker to filter and select the scale or chord that fits your context. You can filter by:

Content: Specific notes or degrees contained in a scale or chord.

Element properties: Structural and perceptual characteristics associated to a scale or chord.

Move properties: Dimensions of change between Scale/Chord A and Scale/Chord B.

2. Analyse properties

Use the Property Inspector to evaluate your selection. Properties are color-coded to reflect their relative character: Red indicates heightened complexity or tension, Purple represents the middle ground, and Blue signals stability and rest. You can toggle between:

States: Properties of a single element or region (Scale A, Chord A, Region A, Scale B, Chord B, Region B).

Moves: Properties of a move between elements or regions(Scale A to B, Chord A to B, Region A to B).

3. Map the progression

Populate the Progression Editor with regions, arrange their sequence, and set timestamps. Use playback mode to audit your choices and track property changes over time.

4. Develop and refine

Experiment with alternative harmonic solutions to achieve your desired musical result. Realise progressions in your primary composing environment, such as your DAW or notation software, as your vision takes shape.

5. Save

Archive your progression within a project for future study or continued development.

Composition

Synthesise and map harmonic elements to progressions, then realise them within your own creative works.

Study

Insert harmonic elements from existing scores or recordings to deconstruct the logic behind why they work.

Instruction
